APL READING CLUB 2018
Welcome to OnSchooler Reading Club! This session will be held at the Albany Public Library (Main Branch) on Mondays and Thursdays 2-3 p.m. from July 9 through August 16.
This intense, 70-lesson program quickly trains students in the pronunciation, spelling, meaning and usage of over 500 words most commonly used in English. It is targeted for 3rd grade students, or any student who is able to sound out words but is not yet a fluent, independent reader.
Every lesson is fully translated into Spanish, so students can completely understand the instructions and the contextual sentences.
Please note some special features for this session:
This is our first large-scale session of the new OnSchooler Reading Club. We are expecting about 100 students and we will be filming during the class to create training videos for schools and material for our Facebook page and other social media.
Each student needs to bring a laptop, tablet or smartphone with wi-fi for the online lessons.
To keep this session completely free, we're asking each family to provide one adult volunteer each week, either Monday or Thursday. The volunteer should be at least 14 years old and fluent in English or Spanish. The volunteers will help with setup, check-in, using the online lessons, updating the progress chart and cleanup.
Most students will not finish all 70 lessons by the end of the 6-week program, so all participants will receive free enrollment in our private Facebook Live group which will meet weekly through December.
OnSchooler Reading Club is supported in part by a National Science Foundation Grant through the Oregon State University Advantage Accelerator.
We use the research-backed methods described in this Forbes Magazine article.
The platform is very simple to use; select classes of kindergartners in Albany have learned to use every feature by the end of the first hour.
